At the tail end of last year, Hush War Cry’s debut offering ‘Lily’ emerged from nowhere and snook into my Top 20 songs of the year. It was something special. Half a year on and we now have a complete EP to savour in the shape of Voices. ‘Apparitions’ with its high pitched yelps of ‘devil’ and talk of fires and tempests is a dark, arresting opener and one perfectly matched by the stunning accompanying video from the ever-excellent Feel Good Lost (see below). As hinted at by ‘Lily’ it soon becomes impossible to look past the Cork band’s similarity with Wild Beasts. Both operate by way of brooding tones, inter-changing vocals and measured sonic flourishes and nowhere more so than on ‘Window To Your Heart’ – a track that wouldn’t look out of place on the Lake District band’s distinguished catalogue. It’s that good that they probably wish it was. Though comparable, this fledgling Cork outfit are more than good enough to stand on their own, with an intelligent, accomplished sound that’s beyond their years. ‘Asleep’ rounds things off in a celestial, dreamlike fashion, bringing to a close what will surely rank as one of the best Irish releases of the year. Highly recommended.
Voices is out this Friday on The Delphi Label, with the launch gig taking place in Cork’s Cyrpus Avenue on Saturday at 9pm.
